Hearing loss remains one of the top untreated health conditions worldwide due to cost and limited access of hearing aids. Recent advancements in technology, plus the development of new categories of hearing aids, have improved public accessibility and affordability in hearing care. As a result, hearing impaired individuals with mild-to-moderate loss may receive treatment outside of the traditional audiology practice, potentially benefiting 1.25 billion consumers worldwide. With similar business models as audiologists, and increased affordability through OTC hearing devices, optical practices are poised to benefit from hearing aid sales. The number of eye care professionals exceeds hearing care professionals by as much as 6 to 1, which may significantly improve the accessibility of basic hearing care for those in remote or rural areas. A new vision in hearing care has begun. With decades of experience in optometry and audiology, our consultants apply streamlined processes to simplify the integration of hearing care. We facilitate an alliance between professionals in hopes that patients experience healthier aging and greater well-being as a result.
Consider this: For every row on a vision chart a patient over the age of 50 advances, they are approximately 18% more likely to have a hearing loss. Vision and hearing care often overlap due to a common disease source or syndrome. Co-management by two doctors is common, but for less severe conditions including mild to moderate hearing loss, a certified optometrist or assistant can help. In cases where the loss exceeds moderate, or if abnormalities are discovered, a referral to one of our audiology partners is necessary. Examining the ear for wax, basic hearing screenings, and hearing aid fittings for mild to moderate hearing loss are generally within the scope of a nonspecialized, but trained professional.
Medical and educational institutions have held eye and ear professions in close collaboration for decades. Examples of such synergy include: Princeton Eye & Ear, Massachusetts Eye & Ear, New York Eye & Ear, Dallas Eye & Ear, Eye & Ear Hospital International, Eye & Ear Hospital Melbourne, The Eye & Ear Foundation, Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital, Eye & Ear Hospital Dublin, Royal Eye & Ear Hospital, UI Eye & Ear Infirmary, Confluence Eye & Ear, Ohio State Eye & Ear Institute
“If you identify a hearing impairment for the first time, patients don’t know where to go to. They are much more comfortable with a professional referral than with a commercial establishment or people who advertise. They also like the fact that their optometrist has vetted the different hearing providers.”* - Dr. Wallace
